Controversial apartment block plans go back to planning

Campaigners against plans to build an apartment block on the site of the former tennis courts at West Hoe say they'll fight them until the end.

Devington homes wanted to build a five storey building there but the plans were rejected by city councillors in October.

Today their revised plans for a four storey apartment block will be debated by city councillors.

English Heritage have said they have no objections to the plans now that a storey has been knocked off.

Frances Baylis from 'Friends of West Hoe' says though the loss of a floor is a change, it's not significant. She says councillors were set against the proposals in October and that she fails to see how these new plans will change that vote, but the plans are recommended for approval subject to a Section 106 agreement.

Developers Devington Homes say they have listened to the concerns of campaigners. They say they've made a number of changes to the plans; as well as removing a storey from the building, they're no longer making alterations to the listed steps or moving the public toilets.
