City planners decide whether to give incinerator the go ahead

The proposed incinerator at Devonport could get planning permission today.

MVV want to start building the plant at North Yard in Spring next year and have a draft permit from the environment agency - the agency will make a final decision in February though.

The company argues it will prevent up to 265 000 tonnes of waste away from landfill sites in Cornwall each year and will create energy for the dockyard.

A new link road would also have to construct a new access road to the Camel's head junction of the Dockyard.

The planning committee are recommending the project be approved.

However, campaigners against the incinerator say they believe it will damage their health, the environment and even local house prices.

Many are expected to attend the council meeting today and a screen is being put up at the Guildhall to relay the meeting to the public.

Some also argue that a small number of anaerobic digestion plants could do the same job as an incinerator without the same impact on the environment - anaeroubic digestion uses micro organisms to break down waste.
