City councillor defects from Tories to UKIP

A Tory city councillor's defecting to the UK Independence Party.

Councillor Peter Berrow represents the Southway Ward - he believes the Conservative party is ignoring local communities both at a local and national level.

He will continue to represent residents in the Southway area until the local elections in May, when he hopes to be re elected as a UKIP councillor.

Councillor Berrow claims there's more freedom within UKIP to make decisions at a local level.

He says locally the conservative party is pricing people out of affordable homes by not giving them enough help.

Councillor Berrow has also hit out at the party on a national level - he thinks Britons should've been given the opportunity to vote on continued EU membership.

Councillor Berrow will officially join UKIP at a meeting in Plymstock tonight.
