City council approves purchase of Home Park

Home Park will be bought by the city council for one point six million pounds.

Hundreds of Argyle fans packed out the council chamber this afternoon for the crucial vote.

If the city council had voted against proposals to buy Home Park, it's likely Plymouth Argyle would have gone into liquidation.

If James Brent now gets Football League approval for his bid, they will rent the ground from the council at a cost of one hundred and thirty five thousand pounds a year.

The covenant preventing any building work on the Argyle car park and office space has also been lifted, allowing Mr Brent to put forward a planning application to build a leisure complex or hotel there.

IN her summing up, city council leader Vivien Pengelly said it would be unthinkable for Plymouth not to have a football club, while labour leader Tudor Evans said 'Argyle ran through Plymouth like letters on a stick of rock.'

The vote was unanimous - work now begins to ensure football league approval for the deal.
