Chief executive of Plymouth city council earns more than £170 000 per year

The chief executive of Plymouth city council took home more than two hundred thousand pounds in the last financial year, according to new figures.

Unions have reacted angrily after proposals to cut overtime rates for those contracted to work more than 37 hours a week were revealed earlier this week - council workers are being balloted on them at the end of this month.

The council's also facing the prospect of cutting up to 500 posts - but many senior executives have seen big increases in their pay.

Chief Executive Barry Keel had a pay hike of more than eighteen per cent between 2008 and 2009.

That figure does include pension contributions and allowances but unions say it's deeply unfair.
