Changes to advertising road closures could save council money

New government regulations on advertising road closures mean that the cost of holding events in Plymouth could fall dramatically.

At the moment any road closure has to be advertised in a newspaper and the city council says this accounts for a significant proportion of their costs.

They now plan to advertise online instead and argue this will simplify the system.

Last year the cost of road closures associated with Lord Mayor's Day was almost £2000, but under the new system it would be around £490.

It also means that instead of charging locals a flat rate of £1000 to host big events, the most they would be charged is £500.

Councillor Kevin Wigens says it sounds like a minor issue, but it has brought significant costs.

The issue will be discussed at the cabinet this afternoon.
