Campaigners step up fight against incinerator

Campaigners against plans for an incinerator at Devonport say they will move quickly to try and stop it being built.

Eighty people attended a public meeting on the issue last week and a number of solicitors have offered them legal help.

The group Incineration is Wrong wants a judicial reveiw after the plant at North Yard was given planning permission just before Christmas.

They say the city council haven't fully considered all the facts.

Chair of Incineration is wrong Robin Keats says there are some simple measures the authority could have considered like increasing the height of the chimney by 5 metres, which he claims would disperse the emissions more efficiently.

MVV have said their plant is a safe and efficient way to deal with the area's waste and that they will start building in the spring if they get the go ahead from the environment agency.

The environment agency is holding a public consultation surgery at the Tamar View community centre in St Budeaux next Monday (January 16th) between 1:30pm and 6:30pm.
