Campaigners against sea front apartments call for public inquiry

Controversial plans to build an apartment block at West Hoe are to go before city planners again this week but campaigners against the proposals are calling for a public inquiry.

Developers Devington homes want to build a five storey apartment block on the site of the former tennis courts.

Protesters are opposing the plans on three grounds - conservation, community and covenant.

They've written a letter to Eric Pickles - Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government - to ask him to call in the plans and hold a public inquiry.

The city council will discuss the proposals for a second time on Thursday, after an administrative error meant a city councillor wasn't invited to a site visit. The plans are recommended for approval.
