Business leaders welcome government's transport proposals

Devon business leaders are hoping new government proposals on managing transport funding could lead to improvements on the A38 and A303.

A consultation has been launched on whether local transport groups should be able to control how money spent rather than Whitehall.

Currently permission has to be gained from the government  for any transport project costing more than five million pounds.

The local enterprise partnership linking Devon and Somerset wants people to be able to use the hard shoulder on the A38 during busy periods and for the A303 to be dualled at Stonehenge.

Tim Jones from the Devon and Cornwall business council says they have to be realistic regarding the A38 as it's never going to be a motorway but there could be improvements made in terms of congestion management to put Plymouth on the map.
