Building site bomb safely detonated in sea

A world war two bomb was safely detonated at sea this morning after it was discovered on a Plymouth building site yesterday afternoon.

It's the second such device found in the area in the last few months.

The device was discovered on Wednesday afternoon on the site of the old NAAFI building in Notte Street and was the same size and type as that found on remembrance day last year.

Ninety people were evacuated from hotels and homes around the area. Some went to other hotels or sheltered at the pavilions, which was once again used as a rest centre.

The bomb was safely detonated beyond the Plymouth breakwater by the same naval team who dealt with the previous device.

Lieutenant Commander Richard Talbot says it is possible there are even more in the same area, as thousands of the devices were dropped all over the city during the war.
