Budget day: what's likely to be in it?

All eyes will be on the Chancellor as he reveals what's in his famous Budget briefcase this lunchtime.

Some of the details won't come as a big surprise - leaks suggest George Osborne's planning to cut the 50p tax rate for high earners and raise the income tax threshold to £9000.

It's currently £8100 - the rise means tens of thousands of low-earners wont have to pay any income tax.

But there could be disappointment for drivers - Mr Osborne has indicated the planned 3p rise in fuel taxes August will go ahead.

The Chancellor's also expected to announce plans to scrap national pay rates for public sector workers, which would mean teachers, nurses and civil servants having their pay frozen until it matches the private sector.

Plymouth has a large proportion of public sector workers and there are concerns they could look outside the city for work as pay could be better elsewhere in the country.

The city's PCS Union has warned it could also lead to more people on benefits, more unable to pay their mortgages and more broken families.

Plymouth Moorview MP Alison Seabeck says it would also have a disastrous impact on the city's economy as people will have less disposable income to spend in the local area and that could put large retailers off coming here.
