Bridge and ferry tolls could rise again

Tolls on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint ferry could rise again in 2014.

It all depends on budgeting, staffing levels and any future work that needs to be done on the bridge though.

Tolls on the Bridge and ferry went up from £1 to £1.50 in March 2010, the first increase since 1994.

At the time the bridge manager David List said he couldn't rule out further increases and a report to next week's city council meeting suggests they could be on the cards as early as 2014.

A report to the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint ferry committee says that their budget reserves currently stand at £2million, but that this likely to go down to £381,000 by 2015.

They say staff budgets are likely to rise this financial year and that their capital programme to work on the bridge still needs to be approved.

It is also likely that when the figures are in, the Bridge and ferry will have recorded a five and a half per cent reduction in traffic flow over the last financial year.

A review on the cost of Bridge operations will be carried out before any decision is taken.

There is no indication as to what these capital projects might involve or how much tolls could rise.
