Barbican businesses need more help, says waterfront partnership

The company behind major gasworks on the Barbican should be offering more help and advice to local firms, according to the waterfront partnership.

The partnership has now written to Wales and West Utilties' parent company Macquarie to ask them to help businesses through the process of applying for compensation.

They say that many smaller firms aren't sure how it works and find the system bureaucratic.

The works to replace old metal gas pipes with plastic ones began in April and  should finish in November.

Chair of the waterfront partnership Professor David Wheeler says their members are suffering, with some of the larger organisations such as the National Marine Aquarium's takings down by £90,000 on its takings for April.

Wales and West say there is a compensation scheme for small businesses and that all claims are assessed on a case by case basis, in a fair and consistent manner. They add that businesses should contact their claims department for further information.
