Awards for city's inspirational young people

Three Plymouth youth groups have been awarded for their inspirational work with young people in the city.

The Plymouth Drake Foundation held its annual 'Spirit of the Community' awards last night.

The charity supports a number of local organisations and has given over £400,000 to more than 140 local causes.

Among those to get an award was Dance Steps, which is a dance group set up by two 18 year olds for children in North Prospect. They've made the classes affordable so that they're accessible for disadvantaged families and hope to help combat child obesity in the city.

The Devonport Guildhall Crew were also honoured for their work. The group organise and deliver community based activities and charity fundraising events, while challenging the sometimes negative perceptions of the area.

The final award of the evening was given to Plymouth East Community Police Cadets, which leads and supports various community and fundraising events in and around Plympton and Plymstock. Their work includes litter picking, offering crime prevention advice, tree planting, raising money for charity and improving the relationship between young people and the police in their area.
