America's Cup 'generated £9m for Plymouth'

It's estimated that the America's cup generated just over nine million pounds for Plymouth's economy.

Plymouth university carried out a study on behalf of the city council and had to use traffic cameras and aerial photographs to come up with the figures.

Around half that money takes in to account the value of media coverage, with the rest made up of visitor spend and expenditure on hotels.

It is slightly less than the ten million pound figure hoped for.

Chair of the America's cup task group Dave Young says if they were to host it again, they could make improvements because they would have more time to prepare and could give out more information about the event in advance.

But some local publicans say they didn't see much benefit from the cup.

John Buckley runs the Navy Inn on Southside street and says his takings were actually down on the corresponding week last year. He says that's because there were stalls on the Hoe, which took business away from the local hospitality sector.
