1 in 5 Plymouth children living in poverty

A new survey estimates that around a fifth of children in Plymouth were living in poverty in 2011.

The figures from the child poverty action group are estimates based on 2009 figures.

This places Plymouth just below the national average.

But figures from the old seat of Plymouth Devonport show that 26 % of children were in child poverty - however the organisation acknowledges that these are old figures based on old constituency boundaries.

Children are defined as living in poverty if their family's income is less than sixty per cent of the average income.
