What is Radio Plymouth all about?
On July 22nd 2008 Ofcom awarded the new full-time Plymouth radio licence to Radio Plymouth Limited!
The search is now underway for suitable premises and the radio station is expected to go live in the late spring or early summer of 2009. It is aimed broadly at 25 - 54 year olds and offers a real alternative to what is available now!
We will broadcast a broader mix of adult music and more meaningful speech for this age group. Local music will play an important part of our output, and we will enhance our news & speech output with investigation and debate. We will not just applaud Plymouth's successes but challenge its shortcomings. We will open our phone lines when council leaders, planners and the Police are studio guests. We will tackle not just the stories behind the days news but also the ongoing issues that affect the city; yobs and crime, waterfront planning, the future of Drake's Island, skateboarding in the City Centre and on The Hoe, and of course David Mackay's grand vision for the regeneration of the city; these being just a few examples. This is something not done any more.
Our music will not be youth driven by the current charts and recent hits that dominate existing commercial stations. Our mix will include great Motown tracks such as Freda Payne's 'Band of Gold', there'll be Sinatra, Bassey and The Beatles; Elton John, Rod Stewart and Dionne Warwick; songs from popular shows such as 'Les Miserables' and 'The Phantom of the Opera', alongside contemporary tracks that 'sound right' for our audience. Much current music will not find a place in our output but there are many suitable pieces that will, our aim is not to sound 'old' or 'gold' but play recognisable, quality music that will appeal to our age group.
Although Radio Plymouth is targeted at 25 - 54 years olds, it will also appeal to many who are younger or older than this, people who are interested in a wide variety of good music and intelligent speech about the world in general and Plymouth in particular.
From M-People to Mutley Plain, from Gary Barlow to Gary Streeter, Radio Plymouth will provide all the entertainment and news you need!
You will be also be able to tune into Radio Plymouth's output at any time via the Internet! To hear a four minute sample of Radio Plymouth's last trial broadcast, go to the bottom of the presenters page.
